Reservoir Trail Update – Bird Removal
Reservoir Trail Update
The Town of Timnath is currently driving the trail around the Timnath Reservoir once each day to monitor conditions and remove any deceased birds that are on or immediately next to the trail. For safety reasons, staff will not be retrieving birds located within the reservoir itself.
We kindly ask that everyone remain on the designated trail and keep pets leashed while visiting the area. Staying on the trail helps reduce potential contact and keeps both residents and pets safe.
Colorado Parks & Wildlife (CPW) Guidance
CPW has advised that removal and disposal of deceased waterfowl on private property is at the discretion of individual property owners. The Town does not have the operational capability, and it is not considered safe, for staff to attempt removal of birds from within the reservoir.
If you choose to remove a deceased bird from your property, CPW recommends the following precautions:
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves.
- Avoid direct contact, especially with your face, eyes, nose, or mouth.
- Double-bag the bird securely.
- Dispose of it in the trash.
Avian influenza is primarily transmitted through contact with mucous membranes, so limiting direct handling and practicing good hygiene are important precautions.
Please do not enter any bodies of water or walk on ice to retrieve or remove a dead or injured bird.
If you have any questions about the area around the reservoir, please reach out to the Town of Timnath.
